There is no national Fire Service in Scotland, instead there are 8 fire brigades which operate under the command of a Firemaster. Fighting fires and providing a rescue service is just a small part of a firefighters day - they are also involved in advising on fire safety, providing education and supporting other emergency services in crisis situations.
Firefighters are no longer known as firemen with an increasing number of women entering the service.
