Fire Service in Scotland

There is no national Fire Service in Scotland, instead there are 8 fire brigades which operate under the command of a Firemaster. Fighting fires and providing a rescue service is just a small part of a firefighters day - they are also involved in advising on fire safety, providing education and supporting other emergency services in crisis situations.

Firefighters are no longer known as firemen with an increasing number of women entering the service. Firefighters are required to maintain high levels of physical fitness and keep calm whilst working in dangerous and unpleasant conditions. They are also closely involved with providing community education and advising members of the public on fire safety. There is a huge amount of competition for fire service vacancies and as such, recruits must display a high standard of physical and mental skills.

In some areas, firefighters are employed on a retained basis, whereby they do not work full time but are available on call to attend emergencies.
