About the Scottish Government

The Scottish Government (previously the Scottish Executive) is the executive arm of government in Scotland and as such, is responsible for all issues that are not explicitly reserved to the UK Parliament. These responsibilities include NHS Scotland, education, justice, rural affairs and transport. Other than cabinet and government ministers, the Government is staffed by the civil service. There are approximately 15,000 civil servants working in Government Departments (directorates). These cover core areas such as Education and Lifelong Learning, Finance and Sustainable Growth, Health and Wellbeing, Justice and Communities and Rural Affairs and Environment. In addition, Executive Agencies such as Transport Scotland and the Scottish Prison Service deliver a customer-focused approach to government functions.
